The Hunger Games

THE HUNGER GAMES
By
Suzanne Collins

Chapter 1 summary

Chapter 1 starts off with the main character waking up on the side of the bed. The main character realizes that today is the day of reaping. Before I go any further lets give some background information this story takes place after North America got destroyed  in a 2nd  civil war and the result of this war is the separation  into 13 districts one of which got completely annihilated so to “celebrate that day”. The Hunger Games are held to control mass population and the competitors are raged from 12 yrs-18 yrs and from the age 12 when u get 1 slip it doubles for the next 6 years and u can add your name more and more for food and oil. So technically the government officials are lining kids up from 12 yrs-18 yrs lined up like cows getting ready for the slaughter. Now the thing with the slips it’s a entry form the more you have the more of a chance you will have to getting accepted into the competition and this competition is a fight to the death. Alright  now back to the main character after waking up she gets dressed and heads to the forest to hunt and meet this boy named Gale so the main character is going through the forest and eventually after getting some game as in hunted animals strawberries etc. as well as Gale bagged some game so when the main character and Gale meet up the talk for a bit and then eat some bread and cheese after there snack they go to the black market to sell half of they bagged during hunting after this the main character and Gale part ways. Once the main character reaches home she sees her mom and little sister Prim all dressed up and a dress laid out for her so she takes a bath and gets dressed after she gets dressed the head for the town square. Then the drawing for the Hunger Games commences the mayor talks about the 72 history of the Hunger games then to the main character’s horror her 12 year old sister get picked…

My personal reaction to this chapter was more on the sentimental level because how the main character fear that her little sister about being picked to participate in the hunger games and I could feel her worry and how scared she was for her sister.

I think the author of this story was trying to get you to feel the fear and sorrow the main character was feeling toward the fact her little sister may be selected to partake in the hunger games  and if Suzanne Collins intended this to be what she was trying to get the reader to feel then she succeeded.
